About Rancho Santa Fe

Rancho Santa Fe is an unincorporated area of San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 7,933 at the 2010 census. It lies approximately 20 miles north of downtown San Diego and is considered a part of that city's North County coastal region.

The community was founded in 1923 by Jesse H. Jones, who purchased 2,000 acres of land from the Mission San Luis Rey for $75 per acre. He had the idea to create a resort-like community that would appeal to wealthy people such as himself and his friends. Many of these early pioneers made their fortunes in oil and cattle but wanted a place to escape to where they could not be bothered by their business interests back home.

Today Rancho Santa Fe is known for its horse trails, golf courses, country clubs, restaurants and shops that cater to an affluent clientele; it attracts celebrities such as Tiger Woods who live there year round or visit during breaks from tournaments around the world.
